When Humor Runs Aground | Sinosplice →
Really great description by an American living in Shanghai, about the cultural differences between American and Chinese sense of humor.
I would say in American humor, if you have to explain the joke, the joke “failed”. It seems, in Chinese humor, it’s important to clarify the humor point.
In American humor, overexaggeration is cheesy. The art is in subtlety. Make it seem as plausible as possible, with only a hint or smattering of exaggeration; puts some responsibility on the listener to ‘get’ the joke. Chinese humor seems opposite, clearly exaggerate to clarify that you are making a joke, and not speaking literally.
I know for myself, I have much more of the American style — and I happen to like it and find it funny. And I am constantly getting blank stares, whenever I try to make silly jokes; be it in Chinese or English. 慢慢來
